Blackpool set for 88m 5G Network trial

Blackpool is poised to benefit from enhanced 5G mobile technology as part of an £88 million government initiative. This coastal town is among 19 selected locations nationwide set to undergo trials of innovative technology.

As part of this endeavor, trials will include Open RAN mobile technology, which facilitates collaboration among various network providers’ equipment to enhance mobile coverage, transcending the limitations of exclusive network systems.

These trial locations encompass urban hubs like Glasgow, Cambridge, Liverpool, Bath, and the City of London, along with prominent sporting and entertainment venues such as Cardiff’s Principality Stadium and Sunderland’s Stadium of Light. Additionally, charming seaside destinations like Blackpool and Worthing are included.

The selection of these projects is the result of the government's Open Networks Ecosystem (ONE) Competition, which seeks initiatives to showcase novel approaches to building high-speed, dependable mobile networks in bustling areas.

Sir John Whittingdale, the Minister for Data and Digital Infrastructure, emphasized the critical importance of a fast and reliable mobile connection, whether one is in a bustling city center or a rural village. He stressed the need for diverse and secure technology solutions to underpin the network effectively.
